Composite bonding is a cosmetic dental procedure that involves the use of a tooth-coloured composite resin material to reshape, repair, or improve the appearance of a tooth. The composite resin is applied to the surface of the tooth and sculpted to achieve the desired shape, size, and colour. It is then cured using a special light, which hardens and bonds the material to the tooth.
Composite bonding normally lasts 3-7 years, after which we advise it gets replaced. The composite material is softer than your natural tooth and therefore is more likely to chip and discolour and need replacing. To keep it looking its best for longer we recommend coming in to get it polished and conditioned every 6 months by one of our cosmetic dentists.
Composite edge bonding involves applying the composite to the tips of the teeth. Our dentists use the latest techniques in aesthetic dentistry to ensure the composite blends seamlessly with the natural tooth it is bonded to. This treatment is used where the patient is generally happy with the natural colour of the teeth but would like the shapes of the teeth subtly improved by modifying the edges of the teeth.
When the composite is applied to the whole front surface of the tooth, this is called a composite veneer. This is a great treatment to mask discolouration and allows our dentists to totally change the overall shape and colour of a tooth.
Composite material cannot be whitened, hence why it is important to make sure you are happy with the shade of your teeth prior to composite bonding, as if you are having composite edge bonding the shade of the composite will be matched to the shade of the teeth. If you have had composite edge bonding then whitening can be used post-treatment to ensure that the shade of your natural teeth stays the same and continues to be well matched to the composite.
During your consultation we will do an extensive smile assessment to determine what the best treatment option will be for your smile. Using a series of clinical photographs and a 3D scan your dentist will guide you on the number of teeth that should be composite bonded. Generally, we advise a minimum of 4 teeth are composite bonded to ensure the symmetry of the smile is maintained.
We always recommend teeth whitening prior to composite bonding. We advise our patients to whiten their teeth to a shade that they are happy with before we carry out composite bonding treatment. We can then choose the shade of composite which matches the whitened tooth surface we are bonding to.
